David Adler scrapbook, 1939-1971.

The David Adler scrapbook of newsclippings reflects the final 32 years of Adler's 48 years in Fairbanks, Alaska. Events documented include the 1948 fire which destroyed his bookstore and two other businesses (the Painthouse and Jessens Weekly) and the devastating 1967 flood. Accounts also reflect Adler's personal and community interests. Included too are copies of poems written for and by Adler. There are a few photographs scattered throughout. Also found in the collection is a name plate from Adler's desk.

David Adler (1894-1971), born in New York City, served in World War I as a member of the American Expeditionary Forces in France and Germany. He came to Fairbanks, Alaska, in October 1923 to visit his brother Don. Soon after arriving, he realized that Fairbanks needed a bookstore. At first he sold books from a briefcase, but opened his first bookstore in 1929. In 1936 he married Mary (Benjie) Benjamin. Together they built Adler's Book Store until it was nationally known.
